You Can Overcome
Promise Yourself
To be so strong that nothing can disturb your peace of mind.
To talk health, happiness, and prosperity to every person you meet.
To make all your friends feel that there is something worthwhile in them.
To look at the sunny side of everything and make your optimism come true.
To think only of the best, to work only for the best and to expect only the best.
To be just as enthusiastic about the success of others as you are about your own.
To forget the mistakes of the past and press on to the greater achievements of the future.
To wear a cheerful expression at all times and give a smile to every living creature you meet.
To give so much time to improving yourself that you have no time to criticize others.
To be too large for worry, too noble for anger, too strong for fear, and too happy to permit the presence of trouble.
To think well of yourself and to proclaim this fact to the world, not in loud word, but in great deeds.
To live in the faith that the whole world is on your side, so long as you are true to the best that is in you.
This Excerpt is known as The Optimist Creed
and comes from the book Science of Mind 71 (June 1998) by Christian D. Larson. My favorite line which I encourage you to focus on today is ‘To be too large for worry, too noble for anger, too strong for fear, and too happy to permit the presence of trouble.’ I have this portion of ‘The Optimist Creed’ written down in a small book which is full of quotes that I write. Oftentimes, I open this book and read a couple of quotes to get me through the day.
However, when it comes specifically to anger, worry, and fear I tend to look toward the Bible so that I can feed my spirit and be guided toward knowledge in what to do when these feelings arise. In fact, when it comes to these specific feelings, I have a scripture for each one written down in the back of my journal so that I can read them frequently. I believe that it is so important to keep a journal of some sort in order to guide one in their daily walk, but I will talk more about keeping a journal in my next blog!
The three scriptures that are written in my bible come from the King James Version and are Matthew 6:34 (for worry), 1 John 4:18 (for fear), and Proverbs 16:32 (for anger). The picture that is included with this blog is my journal with the verses written down as well as a prayer for my life. I encourage you to keep a reminder of ways to help you to keep your anger, worry, and fear in check. For me, I mainly look toward scripture and quotes. You may use the same thing or you could use a picture, a sign, a bookmark, etc. as something that you can often look at in order to make sure that you are not letting anger, worry, or fear overcome you.
For me, the biggest feeling that often arises within me is worry!Day by day, I am learning to not let worry overcome me, however, there have been times when it has come close to overcoming my life. I worry over things that aren’t in my control, both big worries and small worries. I worry about my family, if I will pass a test, if I will pass a class, if I should be helping a friend more, if someone’s cancer will go away, if I can make a difference, if I am a good writer, etc. It wasn’t too long ago when I let worry have control over me! However, when it tries, I look to the Bible, ask for prayer, read some quotes on worry, etc. I will do whatever it takes to overcome what is trying to overcome me.
If you are trying to overcome the feelings in your life that can weigh you down and make you unhappy, you are on the right road. Also, if you are trying to help someone else overcome anger, worry, or fear, I want to encourage you not to give up. You can be the person that gets them back on their feet. You can be their mentor and role model! Just like in my blog ‘Be A Beacon,’ I want to remind you that you don’t have to know everything or have it all together 24/7 because those who are being mentored or helped need to see that everyone has imperfections, yet, we each have the ability to rise above our imperfections and become a better person!
